2006: Twitter’s Creation

In 2006, it was Twitter’s turn to emerge from the nest and take to the web in its own right!

In 2006, it was Twitter’s turn to launch, and we can thank its founders Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, Noah Glass

The aim of Twitter is to give users the opportunity to express themselves and react, with a limited number of characters and images too.

Twitter was a play on words, as we publish tweets (literally chirps) accompanied by our bird logo.

The network was then renamed X in July 2023 by Elon Musk, who bought the bird.

The advantage is immediacy. It’s easy to use, so you can keep up to date in real time and distribute information at any time. You can tweet but also retweet any post.

It’s a well-known fact that as soon as news breaks, we’re tempted to check out what’s being said on Twitter, whether it’s serious information or the jokes people are making about it.

The social network’s real turning point came in 2009, thanks to a tweet from an American citizen who was aboard a ferry and witnessed a plane land in New York’s Hudson River. He then posted a photo of it, declaring: “There’s a plane in the Hudson. I’m on the ferry to pick up passengers. It’s crazy”. It went viral and caught the attention of journalists, who realized that this was the beginning of a new era for news and media.

With a smart-phone and an Internet connection, anyone can forward information. How about you? Is Twitter part of your daily information-seeking routine?
