Indeed, you need to keep many things to keep in mind before, during and after the process. However, beyond the strong cultural aspect involved, some languages can be more challenging than others and localizing content, and especially user interfaces, into <strong>right-to-left languages<\/strong> can bring some challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Internet and the lack of language diversity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10714 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/mastercaweb.u-strasbg.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image1-1-300x183.png\" alt=\"speech bubbles: one with an interrogation point, the other with a lightbulb in respose\" width=\"280\" height=\"171\" \/>When dealing with language diversity, it is no surprise that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/lack-of-language-diversity-reason-for-a-digital-divide\/articleshow\/67105369.cms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the internet is not doing well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Let\u2019s take the example of Arabic, which is the 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most spoken language in the world with over 319 million native speakers around the globe and yet, still in 2019, it <\/span><b>only represents 5.2% of the web content available<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This lack of diversity can be explained by English being the lingua franca all around the world, but compared to other widely spoken languages such as Chinese, Arabic is still quite misrepresented online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The reasons behind the misrepresentation of RTL (right-to-left) languages online<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take the example of another language: Chinese. This language used to be read from top to bottom and can now also be read and understood in a left-to-right format, which is the one used by most languages. And today, Chinese represents more than 19% of the content available online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the population of Chinese-speaking users is one of the biggest online, you can still deduce that <\/span><b>localizing into RTL languages represents a big challenge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that requires extra steps and preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Difficulties and things to keep in mind when localizing RTL languages<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating and designing <strong>UIs<\/strong><b> into RTL languages<\/b> only is simple. However, when <\/span><b>bi-directionality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (multilingual content in both reading directions) is involved, things get more difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Design issues<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_10716\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10716\" class=\" wp-image-10716\" src=\"https:\/\/mastercaweb.u-strasbg.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/unnamed-1-300x161.png\" alt=\"Standard Arabic Wikipedia page\" width=\"389\" height=\"209\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Standard Arabic Wikipedia page<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that <\/span><b>not only the direction of the text changes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The whole page needs to be read in a different direction. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This implies that all the interface needs to be either <\/span><b>flipped over or mirrored.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It includes text, tables, breadcrumbs, icons, visuals, and even slide shows. This step is called <\/span><b>mirroring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Text itself can be easily flipped over with the help of tools such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cssjanus.github.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSS Janus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can convert any left-to-right CSS stylesheet into the opposite direction. However, when dealing with elements such as menus, things get more complicated. Indeed, you need to make sure your CMS and\/or your theme <\/span><b>is RTL compatible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are using WordPress, you can also use a <\/span><b>multilingual content management plug-in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like WPML. This plug-in automatically switches layouts to RTL, provided that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wpneon.com\/best-multilingual-rtl-arabic-wordpress-themes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress theme used is RTL-friendly.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>UX and font issues<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all content needs to be mirrored: as an example, numbers, or even untranslated words from any left-to-right language, should remain that format. And even though the linguist in charge of translating the textual content will translate accordingly, all the stakeholders involved in the localization process must be informed on this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond making sure the <\/span><b>right character encoding is used<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the teams involved in the creation process need to be aware that standard Arabic, Urdu and Farsi are written in characters with small details, and therefore <\/span><b>font size needs to be taken into account<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when localizing UIs into these languages. However, this can bring spacing and truncation issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, the teams in charge of UX, design, development and integration must be aware of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.muz.li\/web-design-for-right-to-left-languages-the-basics-287329d508cf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of these RTL design basics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure the interface is <\/span><b>ready to integrate RTL content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without compromising the user experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tackle and avoid issues when localizing UIs into RTL languages<\/h2>\n<h3>Beforehand: preparation is key<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any project, upfront preparation is key. To make sure to avoid as many issues as possible when localizing UIs, the teams in charge of creating the interface need some <\/span><b>upfront preparation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make sure their product is ready to get global. This process is called <\/span><b>internationalization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internationalization: \u201cthe process of preparing a product to support different language and regional standards (e.g. scripts, writing directions, etc.)\u201d <\/span><\/i><i><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/classroom.udacity.com\/courses\/ud610\/lessons\/3392b96c-d1bc-429f-afd9-54a50847d89d\/concepts\/54198b6f-8545-4d5a-b034-40b6ac759d2d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it is time-consuming, this step is crucial, especially for UI localization projects. Indeed, the interface needs to be designed<\/span><b> to integrate bidirectional content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and therefore ensure no major issue will raise and compromise the rest of the localization project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Afterward: the importance of a good QA<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, having language specialists (or language managers) proofing and checking <\/span><b>the final integrated RTL interface<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also crucial. Indeed, truncation and spacing issues may have happened during the integration. This is especially important as too few specialists in charge of integrating content are familiar with the RTL format.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market in the Middle East has been in constant growth over the past few years. What is more, the demand for UI localization into RTL languages increasing more and more.
