{"id":15643,"date":"2021-09-09T07:47:13","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T05:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mastercaweb.u-strasbg.fr\/?p=15643"},"modified":"2021-09-09T07:47:13","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T05:47:13","slug":"the-importance-of-cultural-customs-during-a-business-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mastercaweb.unistra.fr\/en\/actualites\/un-categorized\/the-importance-of-cultural-customs-during-a-business-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"The importance of cultural customs during a business meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mastercaweb.unistra.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cultural-customs.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15644\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When organizing a <strong>meeting<\/strong> with <strong>international businesspersons<\/strong>, the vast majority of managers focus on more work-related matters, such as creating a schedule, crafting a presentation that highlights the keynotes of the <strong>meeting<\/strong>, and working on how to best <a href=\"https:\/\/mastercaweb.u-strasbg.fr\/en\/actualites\/translation-localization\/elearning-localization-challenges-and-process-of-cultural-adaptation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adapt the product in a foreign country<\/a>. They think that a smooth, flawless presentation of the product will convince the <strong>foreign client<\/strong> to buy it. Even when thinking about the language barrier, their knowledge stops at hiring an interpreter to translate the speech for the partner. But what they hardly consider is another subtle, yet very crucial factor: <strong>cultural customs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are cultural customs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When wanting to sell your product to a potential <strong>international<\/strong> buyer, there are some <strong>cultural differences<\/strong> you have to take into account during your <strong>meeting<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/custom-definition-3026171#:~:text=A%20custom%20is%20defined%20as,distinguish%20one%20culture%20from%20another.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Cultural customs<\/strong><\/a> are patterned behaviors peculiar to a given person or country, that help differentiate one culture from another. More often than not, <strong>businesspersons<\/strong> tend to mistake <strong>customs<\/strong> with personality traits of their <strong>foreign clients<\/strong>, ignoring how much of an impact culture can have on the <strong>meeting<\/strong>. American author and professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insead.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paris INSEAD Business School<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/erinmeyer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Meyer<\/a> explains that this unawareness of <strong>cultural disparities<\/strong> happens because people react to everything from their <strong>cultural<\/strong> perspective and assume that all controversy and misunderstanding are rooted in personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When an American and a Chinese Businessman Meet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/erinmeyer.com\/books\/the-culture-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Cultural Map<\/a>\u201d, Meyer tells us a few anecdotes from the time she spent doing research for this book. She explains the conduct of a <strong>business meeting<\/strong> she held with a Chinese <strong>client<\/strong>. As she goes through her notes for three full hours, Meyer asks herself why her <strong>client<\/strong> isn\u2019t reacting nor jumping in to give her some feedback. At the end of the presentation, she confronts him about it, and it turns out that the Chinese <strong>client<\/strong> was not <a href=\"https:\/\/mastercaweb.u-strasbg.fr\/en\/actualites\/translation-localization\/what-to-know-when-designing-websites-asian-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stereotypically reserved<\/a>, as she had thought. On the contrary, he was waiting, out of courtesy, for her to give him the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it turned out, it was all a <strong>cultural<\/strong> misunderstanding based on insufficient knowledge, on both parties, of the other <strong>cultural customs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A matter of Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another crucial factor to bear in mind when conducting <strong>business<\/strong> with a <strong>foreign businessperson<\/strong> is the concept of <strong>time<\/strong>. In his book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interculturalpressbooks.com\/understanding-cultural-differences#:~:text=Edward%20T.,-and%20Mildred%20Reed&amp;text=Understanding%20Cultural%20Differences%20echoes%20and,model%20of%20cross%2Dcultural%20analysis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Understanding Cultural Differences<\/a>\u201d, the American anthropologist and cross-cultural researcher, Edward T. Hall, shows two <strong>time<\/strong> systems important in <strong>international business<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/saylordotorg.github.io\/text_international-business\/s07-02-what-are-the-key-methods-used-.html#:~:text=Hall%20identified%20that%20time%20is,things%20at%20the%20same%20time.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monochronic and polychronic <strong>time<\/strong><\/a>. The first is typical of countries such as the USA and Northern European countries (Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Northern France), and it\u2019s characterized by the division of <strong>time<\/strong> in specific, scheduled tasks, carried out consecutively. The second, as you can imagine, is the exact opposite. Polychronic countries, such as Southern European countries (Italy, Spain, Southern France) and Latin American countries, have a more dynamic concept of <strong>time<\/strong>, doing multiple things at once. But differences don\u2019t stop there. While monochronic people are committed to the job and take deadlines and schedules seriously, polychronic people tend to consider these as minor, giving more importance to people and human relationships. Another difference lies in the constant change of plans of countries like Italy and Spain, which might be a problem when doing <strong>business<\/strong> with a Swiss or a German, who adhere devotedly to the schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Time<\/strong> is also an important source to be considered when planning a <strong>meeting<\/strong>, even an online one. For example, it\u2019s best to be aware of the different <strong>time<\/strong> zones when arranging a <strong>meeting<\/strong> with a <strong>client<\/strong> overseas and whose <strong>time<\/strong> difference is eight hours. You surely wouldn\u2019t want to wake them up in the middle of the night to try to sell them your product!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another thing you wouldn\u2019t want to do is scheduling your <strong>meeting<\/strong> too early \u2013 or too late! The French, for instance, tend to welcome the <strong>client<\/strong> even with a very short notice and will be happy to work together. On the other hand, Americans associate a short notice to a less important <strong>meeting<\/strong> than one scheduled months in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mastercaweb.unistra.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Image-time.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15645\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Should we be aware of cultural customs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conclusion, whether we are aware of it or not, subtle differences in <strong>cultural customs<\/strong> can have a tremendous impact on how we get the job done.
