How and Why Google Plans to Fight against AI generated content

To the question “Will writers be replaced by robots?” it seems that the Google algorithm is unwilling to make that happen anytime soon. AI-generated content has been getting a lot of buzz for the last couple of years. But for now, Google still plans on considering such content as spam. That is what was stated on April 1st by John Mueller, Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google, and it was no April’s Fool joke. But why is Google standing firm while AI text generators could change the content industry? And will Google recognize content written by artificial intelligence?

Why is AI Generated Content Against Google Guidelines?

Ultimately, Google’s objective is to make sure that online’s content is of good quality. To Google, AI-generated text is still too flawed to be used for arts. This type of content is created by taking content from other articles, shuffling some words around, and looking for synonyms. There is no way to verify the facts written by AI text generators unless human beings verify and fact-check everything. It would make no sense as it would be a waste of time and money. And AI text generators can also be used to create all sorts of fake news, no one needs that. Google has therefore decided to side with human writers (at least for now).

This also makes sense because all content written by artificial intelligence has been generated programmatically and can be used to manipulate search rankings. Which would mean that this type of content would not help users and could even mislead them. This is the main reason why Google says it goes against its Webmaster’s Guidelines.

How can Google recognize AI Generated Content?

To be able to mark AI-generated content as spam, Google has to recognize it. So, can Google tell when content has been created by artificial intelligence? It depends. Content from previous versions of AI text generators could be identified, but the more sophisticated they get and the more the content looks like human writing, the harder it is for Google to recognize. (You can check out The 10 Best AI Writers & Content Generators Compared by the Search Engine Journal.)

There will probably be cases where it will be recognized and other times where it won’t. If the style of the articles is consistent, the content makes sense and is of good quality, it probably won’t be identifiable. Whenever Google identifies automatically generated content that has been used to manipulate search rankings, the website will most likely be delisted from search engine results and will lose its organic visibility.

Will AI Text Generators eventually replace content writers?

So will artificial intelligence become a threat to humans? Will content writers lose their jobs because of AI-generated content? Not likely! After all, robots will never be able to express emotions, feel, or write about unique experiences. They will never be creative either. And they cannot do actual research. They can only write about what has already been written. As seen before, they cannot fact check, which means that artificial intelligence as it is, will not be able to replace human content writers anytime soon. However, it can be a very useful tool to generate first drafts and some usable content, which would need a human quality check. Therefore it would cut the production time. If we look at the bright side and if machines and humans work together, there should be more content of better quality.
